Google Apps "Scripts" and "Add-Ons". ~ Not as intimidating as they sound!
Add a screenshot of the top tool bar in Google with the Add-On Button circled. I will need the drop down menu on an old doc to show the "Scripts".
Definition: We all know the definition of an "app". App is short for application, and it is just a software program or a piece of code that does something you need it to do. It is a tool. A "Script" and an "Add-On" are exactly the same thing. They are just a piece of code that is added to the original app that tells it to do "one more thing" that the app alone did not do. You "add it on" to the original application. Why didn't the app just come with this add-on in the first place? Perhaps the app and the add-on are made by a different person or perhaps it was created after the original app. Perhaps they don't think everyone would like this feature. Who knows! The good news is that there are many Add-Ons that can be really useful, and it is as easy to learn a new Add-On as it is to learn a new app.
So what is the difference between a Script and an Add-on? It has to do with how old your Google doc is. Older Google docs had Scripts and new ones have Add-ons. Scripts are inserted into apps by accessing the dropdown menu for the TOOLS tab when you are in a Google doc. Add-Ons are a feature in the newer Google docs and they are found in the top toolbar on the far right. You will know you are working in an older Google doc if you don't see the Add-On in the top horizontal toolbar.
